Introduction:

The growth and diffusion of knowledge based economy is a fascinating technological, economic, social and cultural process especially in the context of Europe as an innovative and deeply differentiated continent transformed by grosso modo well designed and implemented multinational activities of the European Union.

I hope that the comprehensive and innovative papers of volume 5th will be valid contribution to the European debate on knowledge based economy. I am convinced that volume 5th could be seen as an inducement to design and implement a grand international research programme The Knowledge Based Economy in Europe - Experiences and Prospects.
